Audi vs. Subaru

Well, the car is fairly old, a '90 Legacy Wagon with slushbox. When I punch it, especially around a snowy or rainy corner, the front slips, then the rears grip. Does it everytime. Maybe it has something to do with the slushbox. Makes timing left turns into heavy traffic rather exciting. Never had to worry with either of my Q's. Just an opinion.

BTW - the Subes traction is more reliable than the GTi's. If it's slick I have to modulate the clutch and throttle for grip. No such option (well, throttle) with the Subie.

Your talking about the OLD Subaru system. The new system biases 55% rear and 45% front. Makes a much more balanced car. And even with the old system, I can NOT perceptibly feel Any slip in my mom's Legacy in the snow. And we spend 4 months in the white stuff. IT seems to work great but the new system is Much better and probably one of the best systems out there. Right along with Audi. IMHO.

Add to that the Q's immediate traction reaction due to the 50/50 torque split vs. the Subaru AWD system that allows some slip before sending the torque towards the rear wheels (BTDT) and the quattro advantage in all "true" quattros (don't know how well the Haldex system in the TT works) really shines. THis is most noticable when taking off trying to enter traffic in slick situations. I find I can depend on a Q, not the Sube which slips for a second instead of taking off.

I just have to say, that after driving my 'new' 87 Subaru turbowagon now for
3 months, I really have come to appreciate the quality of my 1300 dollar 86
4kq. The car is solid, shifts nicely, and is much quieter than I realized.
Ya, the electricals are somewhat foul and the engine idles like a pack of
nervous rats, but that sweet 5 cyl. sound and the good torque band really
redeems itself in a hurry. My dream car? 5ktqw, jacked up about 3 inches
for ground clearance. I can only imagine a turbo coupled to the 5 cylinder.
Good low-end torque with high-end passing power. Oh, and no cooling problems
like my Subaru, either...:)
