is my bomb shot?

Hi again,

some of you helped me with dealing with my heater core replacement on my 86
5KTQ (160K), thank you very much for all the great tips. This car has been
kept alive but I guess as things started happening it was donated to the
American Heart Association and I bought it from the guy who got it for
(REL)little money. So lots of things are weird but after reading through the
archive they all seem typical. Here it is:

Intermittently while driving the power support for the brakes fails. It
brakes, but it feels like stepping against a rock, very, very firm and I
really have to step on it bigtime to get some brake action.
Then following no apparent pattern I get my brakes back. My power steering
stays fine through all of this. I have not done the pumping test with engine
cut off for the bomb because mostly the brakes are bad now when I park
anyway.

What should I do? Is the bomb the culprit? The pump? The system has been
flushed by the dealer in March.

Thank you for all the support, without it I would not still have this
beautiful car!

Christoph

next projects (for laughs):
parking brake is stuck
timing belt/water pump
figure out why the car gets so hot in Virginia
A/C (no clue yet what's up)
headliner detaching
