what's the likely sign of a bad upper strut bearing on type 44's? thanx.

Not sure on a type 44 specifically, but on a 4000/90 series:

Wandering steering
crashing over bumps
general looseness in front end
impossible to align
visual - uneven gap to inner tower or movement in strut from inside engine bay
