fault codes: 1988 90 Q

My 90 Q has been getting lousy gas mileage for awhile, especially when the
car is pushed hard (makes me think the car is running too rich but there is
no black smoke coming out of the tail pipe and the tail pipe is reasonably
clean inside). Straight running on the highway (~110 km/h) I'll get about
9.0 L/100 km (perhaps a little high but OK) but if I'm pushing hard for the
whole tank it will go to about 14 L/100 km.

On top of that performance is far from stellar. When I floor it (ie full
throttle), it seems to take off quite well but the acceleration through mid
throttle seems pretty dead. Last night I decided to dump the codes. I got
two: 2232 (potentiometer) and 2341 (O2 sensor going full tilt either rich
or lean).

How does the potentiometer effect the mixture: does it increase fuel
pressure at the distributor or does it allow the cold start injector to
squirt?

Any guesses if these two problems (potentiometer and O@ sensor going full
tilt) are related? Can the potentiometer be replaced by itself without
changing the mass flow sensor (would one off a Golf work?)?

I have no idea when the O2 sensor was changed last.

Any suggestions for my next step? I would prefer to sort this one out
myself rather than just dumpoing it at the garage for a $$$ fix.

Many thanks.
