Interesting that you should mention that.

Last winter, I was driving up the Sprain River Parkway (north of New York City)
to visit a friend for lunch. It was on that day that was so snowy, that shut
down many businesses. I was in my Mazda, shod with Blizzaks. I was doing about
45 in a 55 MPH zone, and wondering if I should dial it back a bit more. Someone
in a Saab went tooling past me at roughly 55-60 MPH. Less than a minute later he
spun out on the gentle curve just past Jackson Avenue and bounced off the
guardrail. The rest of us on the highway were able to avoid him, mainly because
we were driving so conservatively. Someone who pulled
over to assist the driver was an off-duty EMT, so I checked to make sure that
all was all right, then kept on going. I wondered at the time what he had
done wrong, since traction, though definitely limited, wasn't that treacherous.
Thinking about it now, I bet he had summer tires on the car.

Whatever I get for my next car will definitely receive a set of winter tires and
rims. They're appropriate for upstate NY and other snowy/icy locales. That's
also why I want AWD.
