You are most certainly _NOT_ the least wealthy member we have around.
Even you might literally be moved to tears by the disasters experienced
by another member whose current insolvency - already severe following a
recent repair - has been exacerbated by the loss of her oil cooler and
attached lines - GBP850 plus VAT at current VAG UK prices. It's her
only vehicle, and she needs it for work. The idea that quattro owners
come only from the monied strata of society is a myth propagated by
David Preece to mollify his incredibly snobbish 'partner' Cheryl.
The engine will come out upwards quite happily - Roger Galvin and I do
it fairly regularly with a standard hoist rented for ten quid a day.
You do have to have it fairly well stripped - the harmonic balancer has
to come off in the car because the torque required needs the car as a
jig to hold the engine - after it's off the alternator mounting bracket
has to come off and then the engine will lift.
You will be replacing the head bolts anyway - take the head off and
suspend the block on two bolts inserted roughly level with the mounting
points of the engine support brackets.
A rebore _will_ mean a new set of pistons. No way around this. Pete
Reeve at quattro Corner gets them direct from Mahle - Audi's
manufacturers - and sells them on with no VAT. Reboring will cost
you about GBP100 to GBP120 if done well.

Can you give me the exact diameter of your rear caliper pistons in mm?
I'm hoping to hear 60 rather than 54.
