Why would a bad strut bearing make clunking noise

Bill,
A bearing is worn when the inner and outer races do not firmly support the
ball bearings between them. The small amount of movement up and down or
side to side is what causes the clunk.
I refitted a strut once and did not tighten the castleated (excuse
spelling) nut enough and this caused a similar clunk.
