The 90's S-cars (What are the differences)

I'm looking at buying either an S4 or S6 and am looking for some info about
the differences between the models and years. Unfortunately the Archive
search doesn't seem to come up with anything so I'm sure I'm repeating
previously asked questions.

To demonstrate my complete newbiesm:
What is the difference between the S4's and the S6's.

I know a little about the differences on the 95 and 95.5 S6's. What
differences are there in the Quattro systems? Any preferences on one v. the
other? What other differences are there?

I've seen some 97 S6's for sale, but can't find any info about these models.
Could someone elaborate?

Any links to "things to look for when buying" or other info would be greatly
appreciated.

And any of you who may be wanting to get rid of yours, send me details
direct. I'm most interested in the S6 Avant, but I'm looking at sedans too.
