Rob,
I went throught this excercise about 1 month ago. Decided on the higher
priced Michelin Pilot XGTV4 205/60VR15.
Althought the wheel size is different, I have been relatively happy with the
tires so far, and they shine well in wet weather - no complaints at >75 in a
deluge. They are unquestionalbly superior to the Michelin MXV4s (which were
relatively new and I hated them) in both wet and dry. Most folks like the
MXV Energy tires and gave me a funny look when I said I didn't like them,
but they just don't drive their cars as agressively as I do, and as I expect
many others on the list do. The XGTs are supposed to give your cake and
allow you to eat it, by giving you the grip, all season traction, and wear
well too. I guess we'll find out - ask me in 3 years.
My second and third choices would have been the Yokahama db followed by the
Dunlop SP8000, which I have heard are also very nice.
My gut feeling is that I would have been equally happy with the Yoks or the
Dunlops and paid less, however, I have no complaints on the Michelins yet,
except for the initial cost. My local Dealer worked out getting them for
the comparable mail order cost, so I went with them.
They also had the XGT in lower profile "Z" rating - they just look mean!
Regards,
Ben

Subject: Tires... since we are on the subject

Looking to buy a set of tires.... I live in New England so I want to get all
season tires..... dont want to replace tires every year but i do drive
pretty aggressively. I have an 87 5ktq with a 1.8 bar chip and A-6 16"
wheels so i will need to go with 205/55/16's I was considering the Dunlop
SP8000, however i have been told they wear very fast. I know there is a
trade off for grip verses wear but id like to try and stay in the middle for
both attributes. Any suggestions ??
Thanks
Rob
