'01 A4 clutch question

I'll be giving away my age here and probably just furthering outdated
practices, but then they work. From my first days with "T" series MGs,
through Jag 120's, I've always waited at stop lights with clutch out and
tranny in neutral. I've never had to have a clutch replaced and I've been
driving, legally, since 1958. Two years ago I sold my '84 Jetta GLI, 125K
miles on original clutch (also endured my teenage son learning to
drive). I do expect someday to replace the clutch on my '86 4kcsq, but at
161K miles, it's still doing just fine. Oh, also showing my British sports
car history, I always double de-clutch when downshifting, which I almost
always do when slowing from, say, 40 mph and higher. Don't know if this
also contributes to clutch life, but I'd guess yes, certainly helps with
syncros in the tranny, and, no, I've never had a transmission problem in
any of my cars, all of which have been manuals.
HTH, or at least prompts others to pontificate as I have.
