Polish / Wax Odor

Take a peek in the plenum by the heater core / AC evaporator and see if there
is an accumulation of decaying leaves. I cleaned out an 87 5K I bought last
year and took out enough mulch to fertilize a flower garden. In addition to
the obvious mold / fungi / yeast by-products, the decaying matter gives off a
number of volatile organic compounds (with varying odors). Also not good for
someone with allergy problems.
If you find a similar problem with your car, a thorough cleaning and a final
wash with a chlorine bleach / water solution will help kill off the remaining
microbiological growth.
I once found a GTI that had a plugged AC drain allowing the condensate water
to build up start a miniature swamp - complete with all the odors.
Good luck, Jan Lahtonen
