Phil, in a past life when I worked at Tilling-Stevens, a Rootes plant in
Maidstone, we did all the factory engine rebuilds, damaged bores were
routinely salvaged by boring oversize and pressing in a cast iron sleeve.
I'm sure a good machine shop could do it and the cost could be offset by
using the original piston.
I have a stripped down Rover 3500 motor in the basement awaiting a suitable
project, one bore has been honed oversize .015in with the original std
piston in it! Previous owner claimed it "slapped abit when cold" but ran
fine.
By the way, did you ever get that spark plug out?
