I'm not sure what your problem is but a possible difference between night
and day popped into my head(other than the obvious).

Did you check your brake lights last night with your lights on and then
today with them off?? That may be why they didn't work last night but did
this morning!! Your brake lights may only work when your lights are off!!

Just a guess!!

Hope this helps!!!
