'95 Sport 90 A/C Woes - lessons learned?

So is the take home lesson here that you shouldn't have your A/C system recharged?
It seems like that could have contributed to the failure in these cases. How many
out there have had it recharged and working successfully for any length of time? My
'95 90Q's system seems to be working fine, but I'd like to know in advance what's
the best way to handle any problems that come up. Also, any preventive maintenance
you can do for this failure prone and costly system (aside from turning it on
occasionally throughout the winter too)? Thanks,

Joel
