Excellent point, thank you! FWIW, I just found out that the entire
amplified antenna was already changed and the problem, while slightly
reduced, did not go away. The old (Audi OE) antenna was the combination
AM/FM/Cel Phone version. The new one is aftermarket Hirschman,
amplified, no cel (customer didn't want a cel antenna anyway).
What we do know thus far is it was not the amplified antenna at fault.
The antenna's ground is into the chassis (well okay the roof) of the
car. My latest suggestion (in addition to Bernard's excellent advice) is
to check the head unit ground. I also just found out the noise in the
"on position" is not constant...rather a burp when first switched to
"on" that goes away 'till you later start the engine (shop owner insists
it sounds like fuel pump interference he often encounters in ovloVs but
I assured him an A6 should have a better electrical system based on
personal experience...my wife's car is an ovloV and it makes my '87
5kcstq's electrical system look mil-spec which is a scary thought).
Again, thanks to all so far. We plan to get the car back in soon and I
will post the fix once we find it. Good to know it was not the OE
amplified antenna.
