This is for a 4 cylinder app...I know you requested 5
cylinders.

Try "Parts Place" up in the Pontiac/Auburn Hills Mich
area.  They are a big distributor of all things VW.

Earlier this year, I got a "Diesel Lovers"
mini-edition of their catalog.  I also have two VW
diesels.

They had BRAND NEW 4 cyl 1.9l Diesels, including Turbo
and TDI versions for sale.

If your friend is intrepid enough, he could be tooling
around with one of those.  The TDI can make 110 HP
with EC spec chipset, 90 in US.  The base 4 cyl motor
is good for about 50 hp, the 4 cyl turbo 68 hp. I
think the 5 cylinder versions were good for about 20%
more hp than their 4 cyl cousins.  So, you could have
a new 4 cyl motor that will outperform a 5 cylinder.

Alas, the 5 cyl V-A-G seemed to have been last
imported into the US back in 1983 in the type 43. 
I've only seen a few, and they were NA.  My Bentley on
the type $$ shows the 5 cyl TD motor, but that is
_always_ on pages with the word "Canada" on them.  

Never seen a $$ diesel in the US.  Would love to buy
one.
