I am currently having a problem with my 88 audi 80q, and a thorough search
of the archives has not really answered my question It has a cold start
problem. Simply, when it is cold (30 degrees F or colder) it takes multiple
cranks to get started. When it begins to start, it stutters before finally
maintaining normal idle. I live in the depths of alaska and do not have a
qualified mechanic in my area. I pulled the mutimeter out and looked around.
I also pulled a few fault codes off the computer that identified the cold
start valve. The problem and resulting questions are these:
1) The shop manual describes the need for a special vw electrical testing
doohickey for testing the full throttle switch. is there an easier way. What
should happen at idle if I close the switch manually?
2) Per the shop manual I closed the full throttle switch and measured the
voltage across the cold start valve plug. There was no voltage. There was
however voltage between the lead terminal of the plug and ground. Is that
the best way to test it? Under what conditions could I be sure the cold
start valve is being activated, prior to testing the fuel injection wiring
harness.
3) Should I just change the injectors and hope for the best?
4) where the heck is the fuel injection cpu?
thanks jason
