timing mark on cover

I took a cover again and found only long protuberant part which I could call
a boss and which actually matches a mark on the cover. How come that the
crank pulley mark is in different location? I would not believe but I drove
the car. Does anybody know any possible explanation? I replaced timing belt
but did not start the engine yet because I am working on other parts as
well.
