Steve,
Depending on the mod and the condition of a few things, the boost range will
vary. If the mod is a QLCC or an actual EProm reprograming of the fuel and
boost mapping then the boost should be 1.7-1.8. If the mod is a
resistor/diode mod, (such as TAP for example) then the boost ranges will
indicate 1.4 max as the computer has been tricked into thinking the boost is
lower than it really is and this affects the stock boost gauge as well.
Other reasons for low boost are a split intercooler hose and/or a split
endcap on the intercooler itself. SMJ's web site
(http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/boost.html#chklist) is an excellent source
for troubleshooting these cars. You can print out his check list and use it
to check out cars.
The most common problem for low boost is the split intercooler hose, its
very easy to find and not hard to replace. Its about 90$ from the dealer,
however the very same hose is usually advertised on Ebay for about 30$.
Ask away if you have any other questions.

Subject: Finding a 5kcstq
I have been looking for a 86-90 5000-200 turbo Quattro. I have noticed the
cars are very solid, except for a few with tappy valves, steering rack
leaks, and minor interior problems. But I have noticed that several don't
show the correct spec for boost. 1.3-1.4 is the correct peak range. I
looked at a couple of both stock and modified. The modified cars had a cold
air intake or the a k&n air filter, combined with a modified waste gate.
These modified cars did not pull to the 1.3-1.4 range. Could improved
breathing lower the pressure or is this a sign of improper mods, or
impending doom?
