88 5thou tach woes....

My 86 5KTQ tach works intermittently.  All I have ever noticed is that it
either works or doesn't.  It doesn't seem to ever register an incorrect rpm.

I definitely have something loose (possibly a screw, but that's another
story :)) in the dash because if I give it a good whack when it's not
working it will start to work.  Also, I don't know if this is coincidence or
what, but my tach usually works all the time from when I fill up with gas
til when the low fuel warnings come on.  Most of the time when the tach is
NOT working is when I am quite low on fuel.  I haven't been motivated to
check wiring diagrams to see if the 2 are related somehow but it very
consistently does this.
