ECU memory loss

I have never seen this mentioned before but are any VAG cars liable to
suffer ECU memory loss or any other problems if the battery is
disconnected. A friend changed a battery on a Renault recently and the car
required a retune afterwards.
The car that is relevant in my case is a 94 80 1.9 TDI
