> So, since I'm a cheapskate, and I hang out at the junkyard way too much, I
got to thinking, why not just adapt a factory (Volvo, Saab, whoever) EFI to
my car? All I would have to do, is get the box, hot wire sensor, and
injectors, either from a 6 cylinder or a 4 cylinder and add an extra. It
wouldn't run at the right mix though because its designed for a 4 or 6, but
by using an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, I should be able to get it
to run right where I want it.
... funny, seems I posted something similar not too long ago ... remember,
Volvo has some 5-cylinder turbocharged apps too. I did a bit of dogpile
searching and came across a little bit of info, but there is certainly a lot
more digging to do. We know that it is possible to get injector inserts for
the pulsed injectors that will fit Audi heads. What would be great would be
to find that Volvo uses the same two flywheel sensors and a cam sensor that
Audi uses ... it would certainly make the project seem a bit more possible.
I'm not familiar with the full range of the Motronic apps, but since the
components are primarily sourced from Bosch ... there's some chance that
there will be some level of compatibility. One thing that I noticed just
yesterday is that the BMW K75 motorcycles have a triple single ended coil
pack ... which might come in handy for an I-5 ... or it might not. You can
see that my bent is toward an integrated ignition and fuel system myself ...
As far as hacking the code ... there is a list at www.diy-efi.org which
discusses hacking ECUs. Not a lot of Motronic hacking going on actively
there, but there are a few of folks there who are knowledgeable about the
Motronic. The thing is that there is a whole lot of BTDT there on hacking
GM-ECMs ... while it might seem to be sacreligious, it might just turn out
that a GM-ECM might be the "cheapskate's EFI" that you were asking about.
Good luck on your quest!
