[ I was digging through the quatt archives looking for a similar problem
with hard cold starting. All of the symptoms you had were similar to my 88
5KCD so I was eagerly awaiting the results of your injector change what is
the verdict? I have been told by a good mechanic that my exhaust man. is
cracked, vacuum problems? ]

In my case it was injectors. Figures I'd just about checked everything else
out first. In retrospect, I'd recommend starting with injectors and seals
if they have over 60Kmi on them. The injectors start to "weep" when they
get aged. The o-ring seals also harden and don't seal as well. The result
hard starting from both fuel pressure leakdown and air leaks.

A friend of mine with an '87 5kcstq sedan had a problem with a cracked
downpipe - the cat hanger had busted resulting in downpipe cracking at the
weld seam(typical). We were able to use a 7" dia hose clamp to hang the
exhaust (temporary repair), which closed the seam, and the rough running
went away. The car was starting ok with downpipe cracked - just ran a
little rough and rattled. I don't think this is your problem with hard
starting.

If you read through all of the related threads on the post, the most common
culprit is injectors. It could also be vacuum leaks, cracked intercooler to
throttle body(michelin man) hose, fuel pressure(accumulator, pump, or
regulator) as well as a myriad of other things. Of course, not wanting to
spend the $$ on injectors, I decided to check all of the hard stuff first,
including pulling a perfectly good fuel pump, and running system and control
pressure diagnostics.

Happy troubleshooting,

Ben
'87 5kcstqw - 150k+mi running great, but needs manifold/stud repair and
turbo coolant hoses
'85 4kcsq - ~145Kmi running great too!
