Carl,
The conclusion I came to when doing research on what Cam to use is:
For street purpose where you want to maintain a reasonably good idle -
264 grind is a good cam for the earlier low compression I5 motors, and is
helped with a freer flowing exhaust. This I have implemented and will vouch
for - '85 4kq KX motor with 264 grind cam, Stebro cat back exhaust, and
about 7 degrees timing advance over stock, revs freely to and past the
redline, yet still maintains a fairly smooth idle.
In the Higher compression NG/NF motors, the 272 is optimal when used with
freer flowing exhaust. Anything more agressive and you start to sacrifice
idle.
An adjustable cam sprocket is not needed, unless you want to move the power
band, or compensate for a cam grind.
[Anyone have any exerience with a 272 sport cam and Jamex airbox replacement
for a 10V 5CYL? I need to replace some noisy lifters and figure that is a
good time to do the cam and airbox. Is the adjustable cam sprocket worth it
as well?
Thanks in advance
Carl]
