This depends a lot on driving style and fuel quality. Mine last 45K
easy; they might last longer but I replace them anyway.

Well mine's gone ('93), and I've heard of a few others. I wouldn't say
"common" but it does happen sometimes. And the part is rediculously
expensive, and appear to be dealer only.

There was a recall for automatic transmission cars, but not for manual
transmission cars, which is too bad because the manual transmission cars
appear to have the same problems that the autos did. Mine went the day
that I got the recall notice in the mail, cool :)
Saying "often" makes it sound like a regular maintenance item or
something (hey, 60k, time to do the timing belt and the catalytic
converters) which is more extreme than it really is. However there was
a big bunch of catalytic converters that went bad after 5-6 years. This
also seems to affect 100's, but not A6's.

This may depend on the driver:)
"dead" might be an overstatement, but it does lag a bit. Helps if you
use first gear.

Replace the upper strut bearing with the Ur-q part...
