My .02:

I have numerous VW's and Audis and at one point I was putting a steering
wheel from a 90 Corrado (big splines) into a Scirocco (small). Just as we've
been hearing there was an adaptor on the Corrado covering the original small
spline configuration. Note: it was hell getting this thing off, and the only
way I was able to get it off was to shift into monkey lad mode, and hit it
with a heavy hammer perpendicular to the direction it comes off. The splines
are tapered, and the thing popped right off. Luckily I was doing this to a
junk car, cause I really had to pound the thing to get it off. Yes, I tried
penetrating oils to no avail (there's nothing I like better than to spray
some gook on something and come back later).

 Anyway, before I put it on the VW, I attempted to fit it to the 86 Audi
5kcstq that's my daily. The splines weren't the problem, the horn was. If
you take it apart you will see what I mean, the parts of the horn are
transposed on the two designs making them totally incompatible. (one has the
brass ring on the hub, the other on the wheel; and one has the cancellation
thingy on the hub and vice versa.)
