I "stretch" mine to 5000 miles...

the shift mechanism itself on the 4kq can get pretty "clunky" so take a
look at that, too.  There is a ball housing thing where the lever pivots
(I think) that can get very loose or break, and also the rest of the
linkage is prone to developing some slop over the decades.

Don't know... probably every 40-60k miles?
