Disclaimer: I only know about the USA market mid-'80's VW Quantum syncro
wagon and the Syncro Vanagons of the same era.
The QSW has the same JT engine and tranny as a 4KSQ. The rear suspension
is completely different, utilizing a trailing arm and a coilover. The manual
center & rear diff locks are the same as my 4KSQ.
The Syncro Vanagon is a unique beast built by Pinzgauer (the 4WD truck
company) for VW. It uses a Vanagon shell and engine, but the tranny is
modified to add a front output shaft and 5 gears. At the front differential
there is a vicious coupling (the replacement cost is vicious!) to allow for
differnetial speed between the driveshaft and the pinion. There is a manual
lockable diff in the rear transaxle. The modified transaxle is equipped w/ a
very low first gear as a substitue for a conventional 2-speed transfer case.
There is a large frame reinforcement/skidplate that runs down the center
tunnel of the truck to protect the driveshaft & shifter linkage. The engine
air intake, tranny, bellhousing are all waterproofed and vented high up
inside the truck body. Bottom line is this vehicle is built more as a 4wd
truck, not a high performance road car.
