As a common rule, all VW Syncro or 4motion with longitudinal engine has same 4wd
system as same year Audi quattro with longitudinal engine. These cars are the
Quantum (Passat 2) and 97-up Passat (5).

All VW Syncro with transverse engine has the viscous coupling, these are Golf 2
& 3, Jetta 2, Passat 3 & 4, Eurovan and Sharan. The Vento/Jetta 3 never got
Syncro.

All VW 4th gen. Golf/Bora 4motion share the 4wd with the Audi S3 and TT, and
also the Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia.

The only exception in all this is the Vanagon, having longitudinal rear mounted
engine and viscous coupling in the front differential unit.
