When splicing the infamous door wires, I used a butane powered 
soldering iron I got from Radio Shack, about US$20. It's a small
(about 6x1 inches) "pencil". The torch heats a normal soldering 
tip. High heat, concentrated, worked like a charm -- especially
since I was in a parking lot, far removed from electrical power.
