Brake repairs - basic question..

Brake Cleaner... This is what I thought, too.  But it had no effect on the
pad.  Then I read in my Idiot's Guide to VW repair that brake cleaner would
ruin pads!  I hope not.  Anyway, soap and water did the trick.
