Peter,
The handling benefits of a larger tire/wheel combo are quite noticeable.
Lately on Audiworld, it has been found that the optional A6 4.2 fitment
will work w/o problems on the non-flared 2.7T. This means that you can
get some nice 17x8 wheels and slap on some monster 255/40R17 tires.
As for springs and shocks, I am a believer in Bilstein shocks and either
Eibach or H&R springs. If you don't want to go that radical, I think you'll
be very happy with the 17" plus one wheel upgrade along with some Bilstein
HDs for stock ride height.
When you look for wheels, make sure that the wheels clear the brakes of
your car- most 16" wheels will not clear, even some 17 or 18" wheels don't
clear as the calipers are very large.
Although I have not driven one, reports of the S4 seem to indicate that
the chip will make the car almost scary fast. However, a couple weaknesses
should be addressed- the throttle body boot tends to tear, even at stock
boost pressures; the bypass valves seem to have a very high rate of failure
in these cars- this can be solved by getting a Samco silicone hose set and
a pair of Forge or Bailey bypass valves.
Regards,
Taka

Subject: A6 2.7T Improvements
My 2000 A6 2.7T is currently sporting the stock sport wheels with 205/55-16
performance mud and snow tires I put on for the winter months. Now that
Spring is here, I am considering some wheel, tire, and suspension upgrades
while I switch over to summer tires. I would like to receive opinions from
other owners as to the pros and cons of the following: (1) upgrading to a
17" wheel and tire or an 18' wheel and tire; and (2) installing a
performance spring and shock package. I live in New England and I am
concerned about the effect of a lower suspesion set-up in the winter when I
go back to the winter wheels and tires. Given that I may only get the car
on a track once or twice a year, are these improvements worth the effort?
I am also curious about an enhanced performance chip for this engine. I
would be most appreciative to receive feedback as to the effectiveness of a
chip, any problems associated with it, and where to get one.
