IMHO, AWD vehicles like the Audi, VW, new Subaru, etc. allow slip differential between ALL wheels, not just at the ends of each axle. Hence a center differential. Subaru really didn't have this feature until the Legacy ('90 or so). The jeeps are like most 4WD vehicles even today. The transfer of power to the front and rear wheels does not
allow slip differential to occur.
