Moreover, the fact that you are supposed to switch it on and off depending
on conditions usually means the system lacks center differential or is so
inefficient it only pays off to engage it during slippery weather,
off-roading etc. I recall reading about Renault 21 4x4 from the early 90s.
It lacked center differential, so the owner's manual explicitly told you to
engage 4WD only when you are driving slowly in mud, snow etc. and are
afraid of getting stuck.
