lifters started to knock

Hi listers.

I have already posted a message about lifters knocking  about 3 weeks
ago but that time I just started engine for a short duration of time
after timing belt replacement. I had to do other many things on recently
bought Avant '89 and finally I finished today.  I drove the car about 10
min - knocking does not go away.  Before I changed timing belt they did
not knock.  I think 10 min is enough to pump oil into lifters, isn't
it?  What could happen?  Does it look like common scenario for old
lifters?  But the car sat at PO's driveway for several month but lifters
did not knock.
This confuses me.
By the way, after I tensioned the belt I found that cam pulley mark is 2
mm above head edge when fly wheel is in TDC position.  Is it any
significant?  If had missed 1  tooth it would be 7-10 mm off the head
edge.

Is it any hope that lifters will  get quiet?
