90q Wheel Bearing

I'm in the middle of a front bearing change on '88
90q.   Factory set up had only one circlip on the
outside.  Inside circlip not present, although groove
is machined into housing.  I think I read somewhere
that this is normal for some 90q of this vintage.  Can
anyone confirm?  Reasons for leaving it out?
