Type 44 ('88 5KSQ) Speedometer Cable Replacement

I need to replace the speedometer cable in my 1988 5KSQ (manual 
transmission).  Any BTDTs?  I can see where the cable goes into the 
transmission.  How is it connected to the transmission?  There is a metal 
shield around the connection.  Does that come off?
