Intermittent outside temperature display

My outside temperature display was working fine until a couple of days ago
when it stopped working properly.

Now instead of temperature I get one of three things:
1.Some goofed up display with the ice symbol on the left and nonsensical digits.
2.Nothing at all
3.Or sometimes it works fine...

The weird thing is that when I start the car it works fine. After a few seconds when I
start driving it goes out. And sometimes it works...

Anyone seen this before? What could be causing it?
