Another AC question

My AC hasn't worked for some time, but I recently
replaced a couple of obvious leeking seals and am
planning on recharging the system soon.

My question is this... (car is '89.5 200tq)

I was running thru the CC diagnostics the other day,
and the display indicated that the AC clutch was
activated, only it wasn't actually engaging. 
Additionally I have a engine rpm related "rattle"
noise that I suspect might be the AC clutch.  How can
I confirm this?  Could I just supply 12V+ to the AC
clutch lead directly and see if it engages?
