Since you mention it, I just want to add that apparently, this is a
common failure on BMW M5/M6 engines as well. I will make sure that
I replace this part when my car goes in for timing belt service in the
near future.

Interesting that you should ask .... friend of mine had that very key
fail in April. Bent all the valves, lots of damage. I had never heard
of such a failure myself (I posted a very similar message to yours
then), but my mechanic (also a VW specialist) said he'd seen it on the
VW 16V motors.
