Hi guys. Finally got it all sorted. With the help of LL and Toby, we
discovered the air sensor plate was out of spec, due to broken clip on the
stop spring. Went junk yarding and got a couple of these parts from a Jetta
and a 5k. Installed them and set the plate height. Tried starting it, but it
was flooding like crazy. Replaced injectors and o-rings, same thing. Removed
plugs, cranked it over to see what was up with that, and it was raining gas
under the hood! Pulled the fuel pump fuse, replaced plugs, cranked it over
and it wanted to start. Hmm... Kept playing with the mixture screw till I
finally got it right. Car started and was able to idle, but VERY rough. I
then remembered after all the cranking with no spark (turned out to be
ignition switch), to check the oil for gas contamination. Sure enough, it was
watered down enough for the oil pressure light to go on. Changed the oil and
filters. STILL ran rough. After checking all sensors, grounds, fuses and
chasing other electrical gremlins, I put on a Hall sender plug from a 4 cyl
Jetta. ( Force 5 Auto). Nothing gained.
To find out what was going on there, I put my timing light on each plug
wire, one at a time. No spark on #5. I found that by jiggling the cap, it
would spark on #5, but not on #1. So... I looked at the old Hall sender
connector to see if I had soldered the wires to the right ones going to the
'puter Looked like it.(the wires were not colored the same as the original
connector). The wires coming out of the boot were soldered to the wires as
they were coming out of the boot. Then I double checked and triple checked.
Hmm. Not soldered to the right wire according to the colors of the wires from
old connector. Took off the boot, and two wires were crisscrossed in side the
boot! So I UN crisscrossed them, resoldered everything, fired her up and went
for a spin. Runs great, very smooth idle, I have ALL my boost back and I'm
VERY happy!!!
Thanks for all the help
Gary
