Timing Pin.

Hi Gang:
I'm a newbie. Just bought a new to me, used '87 Quattro 5000CD Turbo 5
spd. Drove it for about 100 miles and it started to misfire. Parked the
car overnight and tried to start it the next day and no luck.
There was no spark at the plugs or at the coil hi tension lead. I did
all the tests, continuity, ground, voltages at pickups and so on.
Narrowed it down to the timing pickup on the fly wheel. Removed the
block that has the two pickup sensors on it that sits on the driver side
of the engine, and turned the engine over looking for a pin or dowel
sticking out of the fly wheel that is supposed to trigger the pickup. I
can't find one.
Is that my problem? Shouldn't I be able to see or feel a pin sticking
out of the front face of the flywheel?
Can they be put in without tearing the engine out and removing the
flywheel?
Appreciate any help.
Regards
George
