V8 AC compressor

A friend of mine has got an '92 V8q ("new" climate control). The AC
compressor needs replacement, and he replaced it with a compressor
from an '89 V8q ("old" climate control). The old '92 compressor had
one single and one double connector, whereas the '89 had only the
single. What function does the double connector have? Right now, the
compressor engages only for a second or so. Pressures are OK, so we
guess it has something to do with different control system on the old
and new climate control. Can someone please clarify this, and explain
what the double (green) connector is used for?
