..............I don't have a direct BTDT answer. My mechanic, who has
replaced dozens of Audi fuel pumps, told me a horror story yesterday about
installing an Audi fuel pump, and he mentioned the multiple twistings and
turnings he had to perform to get the pump seated where it should be. He
didn't reveal details, but his story supports the idea that some
pre-knowledge would be very useful. I'll see him again today or tomorrow
and push for details.
...............The horror story involved an Audi that wouldn't start, and
included a fuel gauge reading of a quarter tank. So, it had fuel and spark,
right? But it still wouldn't run for more than a few seconds. He tested
the fuel filters and the fuel pressure and all the parts of the fuel
delivery system and ran up a major bill in labor before deciding that it
must be a clogged fuel pump screen. He got into the fuel tank to explore
this idea and discovered an empty tank, with the fuel gauge float stuck on
a return line that had gotten in the wrong place with just enough fuel to
cavitate and supply a little to load the system. So it wasn't starting
because it didn't have enough gas to run. He was very embarrassed, after
having spent so long checking out mechanical failures that might be
responsible. Thought you might find the story interesting. Doyt Echelberger
