Actually, that may not be true... On saabs at least (and probably
other makes) removing the upper heat shield over the catalytic
converter can cause the carpet and the wireing harness that runs
right over that spot to catch fire. This is documented by Saab, and
they recommend replacing any heat shields with holes in them.
Besides, heat shields are pretty light weight, and it's nice to know
that it's not likely you're going to set a grassy field on fire with
your exhaust.
