right, so remove them - and never put them back.  problem solved.  
remove the door locks, too.  and handles.  open by reaching through the
windows (which you have removed, right?) and grabbing the actuator rods.

It's pretty easy once you can see it.  I *think* it is held in by a
screw, and just plugs in.  It's also virtually an antique part - it's an
old VW resistor pack, I think it is an 035 xxx xxx part number.  So it
should be easy to find.
