Having owned one, as well as a Quantum ('84) and type
$$s:
They look fairly similar under the bonnet.
Put the three in a row together, and the similarities
will be obvious. The 5k of course has room for lots
more stuff. Quantum/Passat could take a 4 or 5 cyl in
US market, Fox only took 4 cyl and m/t.
Fox strikes me as "parts bin car"...some mechanicals
came out of A1 golf/jet (i.e CV joints) and other
stuff came out of the Quantum/Passat of earlier
vintage (a/c control unit in dash)...what I mean is
that the car used existing toolings and technologies
wherever they could pull it off...thus a strong
resemblance to the Quantum IMHO.
The VW Fox was in the US market 87~93. It served as
Vee-Dub's low end product when the A2 Golf went north
of $10,000 new. They wanted something in the
showrooms under $10K, and the Brazilian built Fox fit
the bill.
Our friends in Brazil, on the other hand, get to claim
the VW Fox as a car unique to them. while I have
never been south of Tijuana or Nuevo Laredo, I
understand the Brazilian auto industry to be quite
advanced. Supposedly, more manufacteures build cars
in Brazil than in the US of A.
OAC-not to be confused with Audi Fox, something that
was in the US a decade or more earlier.
