Remote Programming

Hey everyone!  I was wondering what it takes to get a new lock remote set 
up.  Does it have to be done by a dealer, or are there other ways?  Being 
300 miles from the nearest dealer makes it hard to drop in.
I am also looking for info into what cd changers, and mobile phones will 
work in my pre-wired" '97 A6.
