Pilot Bearing

Sounds like ther are two different styles of the pilot bearing in the NG -
we're not talking about the throwout bearing, right. I cold see a circlip
being used to positively retain the pilot bearing, but it would be overkill
as the pressed in fit makes it difficult to come out without the proper
tool.

The bearing I R/R'd was as Huw described - about 17mm in diameter, pressed
into the crank end plate that the flywheel mounts on. I was able to remove
and replace it, even with the flywheel mounted. there was no circlip.

The flywheel is from a 200 TQ circa '90.

I hope this will not make any difference whether I instll in a 4000 or a
80/90, as either one is still an option for this engine to be installed in.

The engine originally came out of a 1987.5 GT Coupe. I also looked at a
similar NF motor I have - same thing.

My current likely options are for installation in my wife silver 4000
quattro, or a '90/80 that I am considering getting.

Ben

Oh - everytime I read something about using grease and a driver to
hydraulically press out the bearing, my mind conjures up hilarious scenarios
like a grease laden bearing flying across and hitting your buddy in the eye
upon a good whack. ROTFL!

[ I was also confused by this too Huw. You said you have the same type
of
pilot as my FWD 80, but I have seen the TYP89 quattro flywheel and it has
the flywheel mounted pilot, like I mentioned at MtW. Weird that yours has
the crank mounted pilot bearing. Maybe you have a special car?

I went into US family pictures and the picture of the crank style pilot
bearing lists as no info for the 80/90q. The one that clips in is listed as
a part number for the 80/90q. Strange...]
