Quietly looking for A4/A6 avant-questions

I am looking to sell my 200 and get an Avant instead sometime before next
summer.  I have looked through the ads on-line and have a few questions.

When did the A6 get the later 'ugly' rear lamps ? I thought 98 but I see
some 98 with the better looking 100 series rear lamps. Are these left over
from 97 ?
Did the A6 ever get the 5 speed or is it always the 4/5 speed auto ? What
are the drivers feelings towards each of the auto boxes ?
Does the A6 Avant have a clear 45" wide load area?

What is the better engine/ gearbox combination for the A4 ? Any comments
from people who have chipped the 1.8 turbo engine.
Again does the A4 have 45" wide load area?

Any leads on Avants for sale in the North East ? I am looking between
$10,000-15,000 and it MUST be a quattro, what's the point otherwise !!!!
